Meet Your Host

Hey! I’m Loraine! I started the Canadian Private Practice Summit because I knew that there must be an easier way to get accurate Canadian information for therapist who want to start their private practice.

As therapist I invested hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars into my graduate education and clinical experience, and I left grad school without any training or support on the business side of therapy! When I decided I wanted to start my private practice I spent WAY too much time googling and piecing together the information that I needed, never quite being sure that what I was reading was accurate or applicable to Canadian therapists.

I found out quickly that I was not alone in my confusion! I had many conversations with other therapists where we agreed: “I wish there was one place that we could go to get all the information needed instead of having to search the Internet and only getting info for Americans.

So I got to work and gathered experts from across Canada to help you get the accurate Canadian information that you need!  Each speaker answers one of the big questions about starting private practice!  Check out their profiles below!  I am so glad you are here!

Unlocking the Golden Handcuffs: Moving from Agency to Private Practice

My 25 year career as a social worker has prepared me to support and coach my colleagues to private practice success. I have taught counselling and professional practice courses at the post-secondary level for years. I have been burned out and compassion fatigued, and I've pivoted and created different niches countless times in my career. I have taught myself the ins and outs of private practice in Canada, from business, to ethics to professional practice guidelines. I love being a therapist! Like you, I have worked hard to get here and I enjoy the work that I do. I have been fortunate enough to have positioned myself so that I can work with the clients who I want to work with, in a way that is congruent with my values and my personal life. I am the mother of three boys, ages 19, 16 and 12, so my family life factors heavily into my day to day. I know what it is like to be a therapist-mom (not necessarily in that order).

In addition to my therapist-coaching practice, The Practice Companion, I still work in my practice part-time, as I believe it is essential for me to continue to experience the ups and downs of private practice, from the burn out of client work, to the administrative headaches to the financial stressors, as well as all the positives that come with owning your own business. I have used my experience conceiving, creating and growing my practice to inform my work with therapists who want to learn what it takes to start a private practice in a structured and supported way.
Everything I teach my coaching clients is made by me, and was made for me. I used the tools I teach to create my practice. My information comes from years of learning, growing, making mistakes and leaning into the discomfort of being vulnerable and putting myself out there. I love teaching and mentoring and I look forward to helping therapists who wish to make the leap into private practice.

Loraine Klassen
Imposter Syndrome - I thought it was just me...

I love being a therapist and helping other therapists!

After grad school spent the first few years working in agencies before taking the leap into Private Practice and I have not looked back!  Private Practice had always been my dream and I am so grateful to be able to have all the freedom (and hard work) of Private Practice.  Every now and then I have to pinch myself to make sure its real!

Throughout my 9 years as a Marriage and Family therapist, I have had the privilege of supervising and supporting dozens of developing therapists in their first few years of clinical work.  I feel honoured to work with other therapists and to help them grow in confidence and become excellent clinicians.  Helping other therapists grow is one of the most rewarding parts of my role as as supervisor.

I live in beautiful BC with my husband and our two children who keep us busy with various team sports. When I'm not in session, teaching a class, or on the sidelines cheering on our kids, you can find me curled up on the couch, with a cup of hot coffee and a generous piece of chocolate, likely crocheting.
